2-11 Alarm fire with a Mayday response in Chicago, 3-31-19

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Two Chicago firefighters were hospitalized after falling through a hole in the third-floor floor of an apartment building near Monroe Street and Albany Avenue. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, when a fire broke out in the building and spread to a nearby 1½-story structure.

A mayday call was issued around 8:45 p.m., as two firefighters fell from the third floor down to the first. One managed to escape on his own, while others helped the second firefighter to an ambulance. Both were in serious-to-critical condition upon arrival at the hospital but were conscious and speaking by Sunday night. They are expected to remain under observation for the next few days.

More than 100 firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene. It was reported that the building did not have any working smoke detectors. Although no one was found living on the second or third floors, there were people staying on the first floor.

This from Chi-Town Fire Photos:

Sunday night, the MFAO (Metropolitan Fire Alarm Office) dispatched units to a working fire at 3104 W. Monroe Street. Upon arrival, Battalion 18 reported a three-story brick building with heavy fire on the first, second, and third floors, along with exposure concerns. A still and box were requested shortly after. Fire companies deployed six or more hand lines, with two truck companies working the roof.

At one point, heavy fire was venting through the roof and top floor. While operating, several firefighters fell through a hole in the floor, triggering a Mayday alert and activating the RIT (Rapid Intervention Team). It appears the RIT team successfully rescued one of the injured firefighters from the rear of the building. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were not life-threatening. These photos were taken approximately 10 minutes into the fire.

Photos from the scene show the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the responding crews. The images capture flames engulfing the third-floor apartment, firefighters working on the roof, and equipment such as Engine 44 and Truck 7 in action. Additional photos highlight the aftermath of the fire and the ongoing response from the Chicago Fire Department.
