Dolton Fire Department news – LODD

Excerpts from cbschicago.com:

Lawrence Matthews, a dedicated firefighter from Dolton, passed away doing what he loved—fighting fires. He collapsed Saturday afternoon while responding to a blaze in neighboring Harvey.

Matthews suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to Ingalls Memorial Hospital, where he never regained consciousness. He was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m. that same day.

A solemn procession of Chicago and suburban police officers and firefighters honored his passing as they saluted the ambulance carrying his body to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The 35-year-old was a devoted husband and father of four. He had been serving with the Dolton Fire Department since 2009. His commitment to public service was remarkable, especially considering his personal journey.

Matthews had been a heart transplant recipient. Just two years after receiving a new heart at the University of Chicago Hospital, he fulfilled his dream of becoming a firefighter, with the full support of his doctors.

Dolton firefighters were called in to assist the Harvey Fire Department on Saturday after multiple mobile homes caught fire near 150th and Maplewood. According to officials, Matthews was on the sidewalk when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

An autopsy was conducted on Lawrence Matthews, a Dolton firefighter who died in the line of duty, but the cause of his death remained under investigation as of Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Matthews, 35, of Glenwood, collapsed and went into cardiac arrest after battling a fire at a mobile home in Harvey on Saturday. He was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m.
