The Saudi Arabian energy giant Saudi Aramco plans to build an aromatics plant at its refinery to increase the production of high-quality petrochemicals such as paraxylene. The president of International E-Chem, a British petrochemicals consulting company, said that this is Saudi Aramco’s first decision to build a petrochemical plant in a refinery project.
Although the Middle East uses ethylene as the raw material for steam cracking to produce ethylene, Saudi Aramco is pursuing a strategy of diversifying its petrochemical products in order to increase its global market competitiveness. Saudi Aramco’s chief executive said that building an aromatics plant will extend the product's industrial chain to produce high value-added fibers, polymers, rubber and plastics, creating maximum value.
Saudi Aramco will build the first large-scale aromatics plant at the Atouda-Dalchemic Integrated Plant (Satorp, which has a crude oil processing capacity of 15.25 million tons/year), which is a joint venture with Total in Saudi Jubail.
In addition to Satorp's aromatics complex, Saudi Aramco will also build aromatics at its refineries in Jazan, Rastanuma, and Yanbu. Sadara Chemicals, a joint venture with Dow Chemical, and Petro Rabigh, a joint venture with Sumitomo Chemical, which is expanding, will also build aromatics installations.
Aromatic hydrocarbons produced in the above plants will be deeply converted in the downstream combined plant for export. The entry into the field of new petrochemical derivatives and products is a strategic consideration for the Saudi government to increase employment, but export products will face great competition in the global market.
