Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
Two Chicago firefighters were hospitalized after falling through a hole in the third-floor of an apartment building near Monroe Street and Albany Avenue. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, during a fire that spread from the main building to a nearby 1½-story structure.
A mayday call was issued around 8:45 p.m. when two firefighters fell from the third floor to the first. One managed to escape on his own, while others assisted the second firefighter into an ambulance. Both were reported in serious-to-critical condition upon arrival at the hospital but were conscious and speaking by Sunday night. They are expected to remain under observation for a few days.
Over 100 firefighters and medics responded to the scene. It was noted that the building did not have any working smoke detectors. While no one was found living on the second or third floors, there were occupants on the first level.

On Sunday night, the MFAO (Metropolitan Fire Alarm) dispatched units to a fire at 3104 W. Monroe Street. Upon arrival, Battalion 18 reported a three-story brick building with heavy fire on all levels and an exposure risk. A still and box were requested shortly after. Fire crews deployed more than six hand lines and had two truck companies working on the roof. At one point, heavy fire was venting through the roof and top floor.
While working inside, several firefighters fell through a hole in the floor, triggering a Mayday alert and activating the RIT (Rapid Intervention Team). One injured firefighter was rescued from the rear of the building. Fortunately, the injuries were not life-threatening. These photos were taken about ten minutes into the fire.
