A 150-year-old barn in Leaf River was completely consumed by fire around 3 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015. The structure, located at the southeast corner of State Route 72 and Main Street, had been a family-owned landmark for generations. It was built in 1844 and stored hay, feed, and equipment. The owner, Nancy Stukenberg, said her three horses were safely outside at the time of the fire and are unharmed.
Despite strong winds, icy conditions, and heavy snow from a recent storm, firefighters from ten different departments worked together to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes. No injuries to people or animals were reported, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Tuesday.
The fire response included significant mutual aid efforts, with units from Byron, Win-Ber-Sew RIT, Stillman Valley, German Valley, Mount Morris, Forreston, Oregon, and Polo. Units involved included engines, trucks, ambulances, tenders, and command vehicles.
"Everything else can be replaced," Stukenberg said, reflecting on the loss of the historic building. While the fire was devastating, the community came together quickly to protect other properties and ensure the safety of all involved. Local officials continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.
