A large barn, a 150-year-old structure located at the southeast corner of State Route 72 and Main Street, was fully engulfed in flames around 3 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015, in Leaf River. The fire, which sparked a significant emergency response, was fueled by high winds and harsh winter conditions, making firefighting efforts particularly challenging. Despite these difficulties, firefighters from 10 different departments managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes, including two houses.
The barn, built in 1844, was owned by Nancy Stukenberg’s family for generations and stored hay, feed, and equipment. Fortunately, her three horses were not inside the barn at the time of the fire—they were in a nearby feedlot and remained unharmed. "Everything else can be replaced," Stukenberg said, expressing her relief that no lives or animals were harmed.
The cause of the fire had not yet been determined as of Tuesday, according to Leaf River Fire Chief Steve Shelton. Emergency crews from various areas responded with mutual aid, including units from Byron, Win-Ber-Sew RIT, Stillman Valley, German Valley, Mount Morris, Forreston, Oregon, and Polo. The response included engines, trucks, ambulances, tenders, and specialized crews.
The incident highlighted the challenges faced by first responders during severe weather conditions, as snow, ice, and strong winds made it difficult to control the blaze. However, thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple fire departments, the surrounding area was protected, and no injuries were reported. The community is now working to assess the damage and begin the recovery process.
