Malaysia research and development of waste rubber and plastic synthetic degradable plastics

In Penang, Malaysia, Prof. Hanafi Ismail from the Institute of Engineering and Mineral Resources at the University of Science and Technology of Malaysia (USM) successfully developed the world’s first environmentally friendly and biodegradable plastic.
Professor Hanafi Ismail's new product can significantly reduce production costs. “The biotechnology research we conducted three years ago found that plastic and rubber waste has the potential to be transformed into degradable plastics. Compared to other plastics, degradable TPEs made from 15% waste plastics and rubber are special additives. The impact of the process can accelerate the degradation process and completely degrade in three to six months,” he said at a press conference. Hanafi said that the production cost of TPE will be 20% lower than similar products on the market.
Professor Hanafi, who began the study three years ago, said that the invention can help solve the environmental problems caused by non-degradable petroleum-derived polymers. Hanafi said that this product, which can help solve global pollution, won a gold medal at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX2008) held in May. He added that the product has a quality that competes with similar products in the market and will apply for patents and commercialization of the invention. “A factory in Kedah Sungai Petani hopes to commercialize this product. We are discussing this cooperation,” he said.
