Mercury abatement efforts accelerate the transition from high mercury to mercury-free PVC industry

The industrial catalyst produced by Xinjiang Tianye Group's new low-solid mercury catalyst plant with a capacity of 3,000 tons/year has been used in a stable production of 1.2 million tons/year PVC in Xinjiang Tianye for 4 months. The longest service life of the catalyst is over 12,000 Hours, the use of the effect completely meets or exceeds the industrial high mercury catalyst life. The successful development of this new low-solid mercury catalyst has promoted mercury emission reduction in the PVC industry in China and accelerated the transition from high mercury to mercury-free in the PVC industry.

The low solid-solid mercury catalyst is a new type of catalyst in which Xinjiang Tianye is further immobilized in the effective pores of activated carbon based on the domestic low mercury catalyst technology. Compared with the existing industrial low-mercury catalysts, the activity of the solid mercury catalyst is increased by more than 10%, the service life is prolonged by more than 20%, the volatilization loss rate of mercury is reduced by more than 30%, and the thermal stability is good.

Through continuous innovation and research and development, the solid mercury catalyst was successfully developed in 2010 and passed certification. On December 6, 2011, Xinjiang Tianye independently designed a 3,000-ton/year low-solid-solid mercury catalyst production facility to formally put into industrial operation, and all the indicators have reached the design requirements. In 2012, the project was listed as a national key new product. The project has applied for a total of 4 national invention patents.

It is reported that at present, China's PVC production has two kinds of process routes: calcium carbide acetylene and petroleum ethylene. The former is the mainstream process of PVC production in China. The calcium carbide acetylene method PVC uses mercury chloride as a catalyst in the production process. As the reaction temperature continues to rise, the mercury that is sublimated and lost in the catalyst will form a certain amount of mercury-containing wastewater subsequently. Since the development of mercury-free catalysts is difficult to achieve breakthroughs in the short term, we will start with studying factors that affect the service life of mercuric chloride catalysts, develop new solid-phase catalysts for vinyl chloride, extend the service life, and increase the efficiency of the use of mercury resources. The reduction of mercury pollution in the polyvinyl chloride industry by means of calcium carbide acetylene is of practical significance for mercury reduction in the PVC industry.

Xinjiang Tianye, as a leading company in the PVC industry in China, is also an enterprise that promotes the use of low-mercury catalysts earlier in the country.
