Box Alarm fire in Niles, 1-15-16

Niles Fire Department responded to an apartment fire this morning at 9701 Dee Road. Upon arrival, units observed flames coming from a fifth-floor balcony and heavy smoke exiting a side window of a corner unit. The incident was initially classified as a working fire and quickly escalated to a Code 4, followed by a Box Alarm. As crews conducted building searches, multiple occupants were found inside, prompting an EMS Box Alarm to be activated as a precautionary measure. The fire was quickly brought under control and remained confined to the unit of origin and the hallway. Several residents who could not evacuate on their own were safely secured within their apartments. Three aerial ladder trucks were positioned around the building, and Niles Engine 2 was seen charging the standpipe system to assist with interior suppression efforts.
