Excerpts from kvue.com:
In a recent effort to empower the public, the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) and local firefighters conducted a “Stop The Bleed†training session. This initiative aims to teach community members how to respond effectively in life-threatening situations caused by severe bleeding, especially during mass casualty events.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, last year alone, the U.S. experienced more mass shootings than there were days in the year — a total of 647 incidents. This year has already seen nearly 40 such events before the end of January, highlighting the growing need for immediate action in emergencies.
To address this issue, ATCEMS is taking a proactive approach by training civilians to act as first responders. Their “Stop The Bleed†program teaches simple but critical techniques that can save lives in the crucial moments after an injury occurs. After reviewing past incidents, officials have found that many deaths could have been prevented with proper bleeding control methods applied right away.
One tragic example was the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016, where 49 people lost their lives. According to the medical examiner’s office, 14 of those victims might have survived if immediate bleeding control had been applied.
The training involves hands-on practice, showing participants how to handle life-threatening hemorrhages. If someone is bleeding heavily due to a stab or gunshot wound, the first step is to apply direct pressure. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, a tourniquet should be used carefully, while still maintaining pressure on the wound.
If no tourniquet is available, medics recommend packing the wound with gauze or even a clean shirt. Once the wound is filled, keep the pressure steady until professional help arrives. Releasing pressure too soon can cause the bleeding to resume, which can be deadly.
ATCEMS recently held its first “Stop The Bleed†course specifically for LGBTQ+ bar owners and community members, recognizing the importance of reaching high-risk areas. The goal is to expand the program to other businesses and install “Stop The Bleed†kits in public spaces for quick access. Eventually, they hope to train the broader community so everyone is prepared in case of an emergency.
To make this vision a reality, the department is actively seeking grants and funding opportunities to support the expansion of the program.
