Bill Friedrich recently added the image below to his collection and reached out to Drew Smith for help in determining its age.
![Prospects Fire Department history]()
Drew provided the following historical context:
The photo was confirmed to be from 1963.
Here are a few additional observations:
- When the station was originally built, a neon sign reading "FIRE DEPARTMENT" was placed above the overhead door. This was later replaced with red letters that read "PROSPECT HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT." The photo Bill has shows the newer lettering. Also, the paint store sign to the left indicates this is a later photo, as the store remained there until the new Walgreens opened. I have other photos showing the same red PHFD lettering with a different business occupying the paint store's space. Additionally, when the station was first constructed, there was no curb between the road and the apron—just a gravel transition.
- Below is a breakdown of three key pieces from that era:

Red & white wagon used by fire chief |
- The station wagon was used by the fire chief and was likely assigned to the first two chiefs. There have only been four chiefs in the history of the Prospects Heights Fire Department:
Fran Foor (1944–1962) – Served as president of the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association in 1954
William Andrew (1962–1969)
Donald Gould, Sr. (1969–1988)
Donald Gould, Jr. (1988–present)
- Based on the license plates, I believe this photo was taken in 1963. According to the Illinois vehicle registration page, license plates in 1963 were dark green with gold letters, which matches what I see in the photo.
- The red and white 1957 Ford was replaced in 1966 by a Chevrolet Impala station wagon.
- Between 1964 and 1968, the department acquired three new vehicles:

- The 1947 Ford Darley pumper remained in service until the 1970s. In 1973, the department purchased a new Dodge station wagon for the chief, along with a Ward LaFrance pumper and its first ambulance, built on a Dodge van.
I’ve attached a few additional photos for reference:
![Prospect Heights FD 1957 chief's car]()
- This appears to be the 1957 Ford when it was new. The red license plate with white letters is from 1957.
![Prospect Heights FD 1948 Ford van]()
- This is the 1948 Ford “pie wagon,†a nickname used by longtime members even after it was retired. It has since been restored by someone in the Northwest Suburbs, though no contact details are available.
