With growing awareness of environmental protection and health, demand for eco-friendly coatings has surged. However, traditional coatings often contain around 50% solvents, which not only pollute the environment during production and application but also pose serious health risks. While high-end imported coatings are available, they are costly and difficult to scale up for widespread use. Recently, the Beijing University of Chemical Technology announced a breakthrough in developing a high-quality, environmentally friendly, and low-cost advanced acrylic nano-architectural paint, which is expected to address key challenges in China's paint industry.
In recent years, global leading paint companies have been focusing on developing eco-friendly products such as water-based coatings, high-solids coatings, and powder coatings. Among these, waterborne acrylic latex paints are particularly promising. However, in China, only a few manufacturers have annual capacities exceeding 10,000 tons, and most of the products available are of low quality. Meanwhile, imported high-grade acrylic paints are generally more than five times the price of domestic alternatives, making them inaccessible for many consumers.
Faced with this challenge, Beijing University of Chemical Technology spent years researching and finally developed the key formulas and technologies for producing high-grade acrylic latex paint. The resulting product offers excellent decorative effects, strong water resistance, and superior aging resistance, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use in various environments. Importantly, since the process uses water as a dispersant, there is no pollution during either production or application. Additionally, the product’s competitive pricing gives it a clear advantage over imported options, offering significant economic and social benefits.
Experts from the Beijing Technology Transfer Center for Chemical Technology and Environmental Protection noted that the technology incorporates new nanomaterials without the need for photocatalysts that rely on specific light sources. This allows the product to offer antibacterial, anti-mold, air-purifying properties, and long-term release of negative ions. It also provides good coverage, soft color, fine texture, and excellent water and stain resistance. The paint is non-toxic, odorless, and free from heavy metals and radioactive substances.
Furthermore, the addition of special nanomaterials enhances the film-forming performance of the acrylic latex coating, significantly improving its flexibility and scrub resistance. Once applied, the coating remains intact, avoiding issues like cracking, peeling, or flaking caused by changes in temperature and humidity. This innovation marks a major step forward in the development of sustainable and high-performance architectural coatings.
