With growing awareness of environmental protection and health, consumer demand for eco-friendly coatings has surged. However, traditional coatings often contain up to 50% solvents, which not only harm the environment during production and application but also pose serious risks to human health. While high-end imported coatings offer better performance, they are expensive and difficult to scale for widespread use. Recently, the Beijing University of Chemical Technology announced a breakthrough in developing a high-quality, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective acrylic nano-architectural paint that could revolutionize China's paint industry.
In recent years, global paint companies have been focusing on developing eco-friendly alternatives such as water-based coatings, high-solids coatings, and powder coatings. Among these, waterborne acrylic latex paints have gained significant attention due to their low pollution and resource-saving benefits. However, in China, only a few manufacturers have a production capacity exceeding 10,000 tons per year, and most of the products available are of lower quality. Meanwhile, imported premium paints can be more than five times pricier than domestic options, limiting their accessibility.
To address this gap, Beijing University of Chemical Technology spent years researching and refining its technology. The resulting high-grade acrylic latex paint offers excellent decorative effects, strong water resistance, and superior aging resistance. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications across various environments. Importantly, since the process uses water as a dispersant, there is no pollution during production or application. Additionally, it offers competitive pricing compared to imported products, providing both economic and social value.
Experts from the Beijing Technology Transfer Center for Chemical Technology and Environmental Protection highlighted that the technology incorporates advanced nanomaterials without the need for photocatalysts that rely on specific light sources. The resulting paint not only has antibacterial, anti-mold, and air-purifying properties but also releases negative ions over time. It features good opacity, soft color, fine texture, and excellent water and stain resistance. The product is non-toxic, odorless, and free from heavy metals and radioactive substances. Moreover, the addition of special nanomaterials enhances the film-forming performance, improving flexibility and scrub resistance. Once applied, the coating remains stable, avoiding cracking, peeling, or flaking even under changing temperature and humidity conditions.
