China's automotive industry is currently on a fast track of growth, and its supporting automotive plastics sector has also experienced rapid development. However, Li Shangbiao, deputy director of the National Automobile Parts Quality Inspection Center, stated in an interview that China's automotive plastics industry still lags behind the needs of the broader automotive sector. Issues such as low specialization, limited product variety, lack of standardization, outdated technology, and an unbalanced personnel structure are all hindrances to further progress.
Li Shanglu explained that the use of plastics in vehicles is expanding in both quantity and diversity. The application of plastics is no longer limited to interior components but is increasingly extending to exterior parts, body structures, and even structural elements. Future trends point toward the development of high-performance materials, such as reinforced plastics and advanced resins, as well as recyclable and eco-friendly alternatives. Currently, few domestic companies produce specialized automotive plastic brands, and their products often fail to meet safety and environmental standards. As a result, many are forced to import or substitute with other materials.
Li Shangyu pointed out that most domestic automotive plastics producers are small or medium-sized enterprises, which lack the professional expertise and innovation capabilities needed for long-term growth. The absence of strong brand presence remains a major challenge. While there are numerous manufacturers of modified plastics, very few specialize in producing automotive-grade raw materials, especially high-end ones. Compared to foreign counterparts, domestic firms are technologically behind, and their R&D speed cannot match the rapid advancements made by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Due to weak branding, OEMs are hesitant to adopt domestic materials without extensive testing. To save time, some prefer to use imported materials from the start.
The number of domestic automotive plastic brands is still limited, and issues such as low standardization, serialization, and generalization remain significant challenges. OEMs have few reliable domestic options, and product quality is often inconsistent.
Although many domestic modified plastics manufacturers now recognize the need to accelerate new product development and align more closely with OEM requirements, most are not yet fully professional. Their technical teams often lack deep knowledge of automotive-specific demands, and there is a shortage of expertise in production techniques, structural performance, and quality control. These gaps continue to limit the growth of China's automotive plastics industry.
