The development of automotive plastics faces many difficulties

China's automotive industry is currently moving at a rapid pace, with the automotive plastics sector also experiencing significant growth. However, Li Shangbiao, deputy director of the National Automobile Parts Quality Inspection Center, highlighted in an interview that China's automotive plastics industry still faces major challenges in meeting the demands of the broader automotive sector. Issues such as low specialization, limited product diversity, lack of standardized regulations, and outdated technology are hindering progress. Additionally, an unbalanced personnel structure further complicates the development of this crucial industry. Li Shanglu emphasized that the use of plastics in vehicles is expanding rapidly, both in terms of quantity and variety. The application of plastics is no longer limited to interior components but is now extending to exterior parts, body panels, and even structural elements. The future trend is moving toward the development of high-performance materials such as reinforced plastics, advanced resins, and eco-friendly, recyclable options. However, the domestic market still lacks strong automotive-specific plastic brands. The safety and environmental performance of existing products are often insufficient, leading many companies to rely on imported materials or alternative solutions. Li Shangyu pointed out that most domestic automotive plastics manufacturers are small or medium-sized enterprises, which have limited expertise and weak R&D capabilities. The absence of well-known brand products remains a major problem. While there are numerous manufacturers of modified plastics, few specialize in producing automotive-grade raw materials—especially high-end ones. Compared to their international counterparts, domestic firms lag behind in technology and struggle to match the speed of new product development by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Due to the lack of brand recognition, OEMs often hesitate to adopt domestic materials, requiring lengthy evaluations. As a result, some prefer to use imported materials from the start to streamline the development process. The number of domestic automotive plastic brands remains low, and issues such as poor standardization, lack of serialization, and limited generalization are critical concerns. There are very few trusted domestic brands available for OEMs to choose from, and product quality is inconsistent. While many domestic modified plastics manufacturers are becoming more aware of the need to accelerate new product development and align with OEM requirements, most automotive plastics producers are still not professional in their approach. The technical team structure is often inefficient, and there is a lack of deep understanding of the specific needs of automotive plastics. Additionally, many companies lack the expertise in production techniques, automotive structural performance, and quality testing, which limits their ability to innovate and grow. In conclusion, while the Chinese automotive plastics industry shows potential, it still has a long way to go in terms of technological advancement, standardization, and brand development to fully support the growing automotive sector.
