On January 17, 2020, during a severe snowstorm, Truck Company 48 responded to a fire at 1539 S. Hamlin in Chicago. The building was an empty, three-story ordinary structure measuring 30 feet by 75 feet. Engine 109 was the first unit on scene since Engine 38 was occupied with an EMS call. Battalion 14 arrived quickly and immediately established a perimeter. Due to difficulties with forcible entry and the fire already spreading across all three floors, crews went defensive.
Engine 38 and Engine 99 served as the box engines, supplying water to the master streams (TL5 and SS1). A 2-2-4 alarm was called shortly after for additional personnel, though it's unclear if the 2-11 engines were actually deployed. Wind gusts reached up to 35 mph, and heavy snowfall continued throughout the incident, making firefighting efforts extremely challenging.
The conditions tested the skills and endurance of the firefighters, who had to battle both the fire and the harsh winter weather. Despite the difficulties, crews worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
