2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 1-17-20

On January 17, 2020, during a severe snowstorm, Truck Company 48 responded to a fire at 1539 S. Hamlin in Chicago. The structure was an empty, three-story ordinary building measuring 30 by 75 feet. Engine 109 was the first unit on scene, as Engine 38 was occupied with an EMS call. Battalion 14 arrived quickly and immediately secured the area. Due to challenges with forced entry and the fire already spreading across all three floors, crews opted for a defensive approach. Engine 38 and Engine 99 served as box engines, supplying water to the master streams (TL5 and SS1). Shortly after, a 2-2-4 alarm was called for additional personnel, though it seems the 2-11 engines were not deployed. The conditions were extremely challenging—wind gusts reached up to 35 mph, and heavy snowfall persisted throughout the incident, making firefighting efforts particularly difficult. Despite these harsh conditions, firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze. Several images from Chi-Town Fire Photos capture the intensity of the situation, showing firefighters battling the fire under blizzard-like conditions. One image highlights an E-One tower ladder engaged in the operation, while others show firefighters using elevated master streams and deck guns amid falling snow. These photos reflect the dedication and bravery of the men and women who risk their lives to protect the community, even in the most adverse weather.
