In recent years, Dong Yin, a senior engineer at the Yunnan Provincial Commission of Science and Technology (now the Department of Science and Technology), developed a patented technology known as the waste heat hydrogen engine, also referred to as ethanol-based hydrogen production technology. This innovation has drawn significant attention from the automotive, energy sectors, and national authorities.
Xiang Zhaobin, a long-time advocate for this technology, recommended it to the Yunnan Provincial Government, urging them to provide policy support for its development. Governor Qin Guangrong gave important instructions on Xiang’s proposal, prompting the Yunnan Provincial Department of Science and Technology and the Economic Commission to collaborate with the Yunnan Provincial Transportation Research Institute, Kunming New Energy Development Co., Ltd., and Kunming Xinba Bus Company. Together, they began developing a waste heat hydrogen engine system for carburetor and EFI vehicles, based on independent innovation. The initiative gained momentum quickly, marking a major step forward in the field.
Currently, several United Nations departments have shown strong interest in the waste heat hydrogen engine technology pioneered in Yunnan. They are reaching out to both Dong Yin, the inventor, and Xiang Zhaobin, who has been actively promoting the technology. They have invited them to present the technology at relevant international UN conferences, signaling growing global recognition.
On May 17, 2007, the High-tech Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology organized a symposium in Beijing focused on waste heat hydrogen engine technology. Experts from China Petroleum Chemical Engineering Corporation, China Petrochemical Planning Institute, and the China Automotive Engineering Society attended, along with Dong Yin and Xiang Zhaobin. After thorough discussions, the experts concluded that using waste heat to crack aqueous ethanol into hydrogen-rich gas is technically feasible and could be applied in real-world engineering scenarios.
In January 2008, media reported that Dongfeng Motor successfully conducted a loading test for its “aqueous ethanol reforming hydrogen-rich fuel engine,†marking the first road test of a self-branded ethanol vehicle. The vehicle used 65% ethanol to produce hydrogen-rich gas, significantly reducing fuel costs while improving power and emissions performance. Dongfeng planned to invest 200 million yuan to build a production base and specialized facilities, aiming to launch small batches of the vehicle by year-end.
Why has this technology, which had been relatively quiet for over two decades, now gained renewed attention? First, it represents a world-leading innovation that aligns with national needs and public interests. Dong Yin filed a patent for the “waste heat hydrogen engine†in 1985 (Patent No. 85109487.2) and another for the “cracking hydrogen production process and special equipment†in 1996 (Patent No. ZL96100965.9). His method involves using engine waste heat to catalytically crack alcohol or gasoline with boiling points between 40°C and 200°C into hydrogen-rich gas, which is then used for combustion. The technology earned multiple awards, including the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1994 and the National Science and Technology Promotion Certificate in 1997.
Second, the technology has captured the attention of government agencies and the automotive industry. Since October 2006, numerous media outlets covered the patented technology, sparking widespread public interest. Major domestic automakers began contacting Dong Yin, visiting Kunming, or engaging third parties to learn more about the technology.
In early 2007, experts from Changan Automobile visited Kunming New Energy Development Co., Ltd., tested the “Hydrogen Vehicle,†and expressed interest in collaboration. In March 2007, representatives from Dongfeng Motor, Wuhan University of Technology, and Kunming New Energy Development Co., Ltd. signed an agreement to develop two ethanol-hydrogen vehicles within six months, with plans to mass-produce 50–100 units in a year.
Huang Zhengxia, Chairman of Dongfeng Motor Group, emphasized the strategic importance of industrializing the technology, calling it a key opportunity for the company's future growth. He praised the technology’s potential to reduce fuel costs, improve performance, and cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 60%.
As the technology continues to gain traction, it highlights the potential of ethanol-based hydrogen power to revolutionize the automotive and energy sectors, offering a sustainable and economically viable alternative to traditional fuels.
