This growing need caught the attention of China National Heavy Duty Truck (CNHTC), one of China’s leading manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles. On September 27, CNHTC delivered 54 low-speed terminal tractors to the Shanghai Yangshan Port area, marking what is believed to be the largest single order in recent years. This significant deal highlights the company’s growing influence and reputation in the domestic market. As a leader in heavy-duty truck manufacturing, CNHTC has not only excelled in traditional models like dump trucks and tractor-trailers but has also made substantial progress in specialized vehicles such as snow removal trucks, fire engines, and cement mixers. Their efforts have led to "more flowering" across various sectors, expanding their presence beyond conventional markets. During an interview after the delivery ceremony, CNHTC Chairman Ma Chunji emphasized the company’s strong sense of responsibility and commitment to innovation. He stated that CNHTC aims to lead the development of heavy vehicles in multiple fields and replace imported models with domestically produced alternatives. The company’s expansion, especially in the low-speed tractor segment, reflects its long-term vision and determination to maintain its leadership in the Chinese heavy truck industry. Ma Jing, head of CNHTC Jinan Special Vehicle Co., Ltd., explained that the company started researching low-speed traction vehicles for ports as early as 1998. By 2000, they successfully launched the first model, which quickly gained traction in the market. Over the years, CNHTC has continuously improved key technologies, making their low-speed tractors more suitable for the Chinese market and increasingly popular among major ports. According to Ma Jing, other domestic manufacturers began entering the low-speed tractor market around 2005. However, CNHTC was the first to achieve performance levels comparable to international standards. Their products meet the specific needs of port terminals, airports, logistics parks, and construction sites, offering cost-effective solutions for short-distance, heavy-load transportation. Bao Qifan, vice president of the Shanghai International Port Group, noted that before the rise of CNHTC, most low-speed tractors in Shanghai were imported. Now, with prices being about one-third of those from the U.S., CNHTC’s tractors are becoming a preferred choice. This large-scale procurement is expected to strengthen the partnership between Shanghai Port and CNHTC. A representative from Yangshan Port added that CNHTC’s low-speed tractors offer a balanced price-performance ratio, with lower maintenance costs and easier access to spare parts—key advantages for domestic port operations. These features make them ideal for practical use in China’s logistics and transport sectors. Over the past few years, CNHTC’s low-speed tractors have matured significantly, forming three series with 12 models. They have been widely adopted by major ports such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Qingdao, and Tianjin, and are now being exported in small quantities. Currently, the annual production capacity stands at 2,000 units, with 70% of coastal ports using CNHTC’s low-speed tractors. Previously, many Chinese ports relied on imported brands like Otva, Kamset, and Maffei, which were expensive. However, as CNHTC’s performance became known, more ports began purchasing their tractors. Today, CNHTC is the largest supplier of low-speed tractors in China, outpacing smaller competitors through scale and innovation. In Shanghai alone, CNHTC has sold over 120 low-speed tractors. With a growing presence in both domestic and international markets, the company continues to expand its reach. Its focus on independent innovation and cost reduction has allowed it to carve out a unique path in the heavy truck industry. CNHTC’s success in special vehicles has positioned it as a key player in the market. From terminal tractors to snow trucks and fire engines, the company has achieved “multi-flowering” across different segments. This diversification has helped it stand out in a competitive landscape once dominated by foreign brands. With the completion of its production base in Jinan in 2005, CNHTC has significantly boosted its output. The facility can produce over 10,000 units annually, with power outputs ranging from 220 to 550 horsepower. Its products are used in industries such as mining, oil, and ports, and have even been exported to countries like Gabon and Sudan. CNHTC’s dedication to innovation and quality has solidified its position in the market. Special vehicles have become a “new force” in the heavy truck industry, contributing to the company’s growth and global ambitions.
