Follow the trend of Delphi to the future

The automotive electronics market has shown significant growth, with forecasts indicating that from 2007 to 2013, the content of electronic components per vehicle will grow at an annual rate of 4.9%, outpacing the global automotive industry’s average of 3.2%. In China, this growth is even more pronounced, reaching 17.2% annually. By 2007, the global automotive electronics market was valued at $70 billion and is expected to grow at a steady 5% annually, potentially reaching $120 billion by 2014. Delphi, one of the world’s leading automotive parts manufacturers, predicts that Asia will be the key driver of this growth. In a recent interview, Delphi’s global vice president, Jeffrey J. Owens, and Asia-Pacific regional head, Mr. Jiang Jian, confirmed that 81% of shareholders have approved the bankruptcy reorganization plan, signaling that Delphi is nearing the completion of its restructuring process. “Going out of bankruptcy protection is just a procedural step,” Owens emphasized, highlighting that no major obstacles remain. This marks a new chapter for the company as it prepares to emerge stronger and more focused on innovation. Delphi’s reorganization plan, submitted in 2007, outlined five core areas of focus: strengthening relationships with U.S. unions, resolving historical issues with General Motors, adjusting product lines, reducing operational costs, and supporting pension plans. The company also committed to streamlining its operations by closing non-core facilities and focusing on six key product areas: control and anti-theft systems, electrical architecture, entertainment and communications, powertrain, safety, and climate control. With a new organizational structure centered around Product Business Units (PBUs), Delphi has improved efficiency and customer focus. This shift has allowed for clearer roles and faster decision-making, which O’Jerry, Delphi’s leader, believes has helped maintain strong customer trust during the reorganization process. In fact, Delphi secured over $52 billion in new orders during the past two years, demonstrating continued confidence from both customers and labor unions. China has become a critical growth engine for Delphi. In 2007, the Chinese market surpassed other regions, achieving a 40% year-on-year increase in revenue, far exceeding the national automotive industry’s growth. To support this expansion, Delphi invested heavily in new facilities, including the relocation and expansion of its Changchun plant and the opening of the Shanghai A5 wire harness factory, which now has an 80% increase in production capacity. Additionally, Delphi strengthened partnerships with local automakers like BAIC and Beiqi, while expanding its after-sales service network. Delphi’s R&D efforts in China have also seen rapid growth. The second phase of its Shanghai Technology Center, which added 12,600 square meters of space, increased the number of engineers from 400 to 600. The center now focuses on powertrain systems, electronics, and safety solutions, accelerating the localization of advanced technologies. Looking ahead, Delphi sees significant opportunities in green technology, safety, and connectivity. With the U.S. population aging and spending power remaining strong, the automotive market is expected to remain resilient. Delphi anticipates that hybrid and electric vehicles will play a crucial role in meeting fuel efficiency standards, with hybrid technology offering a viable solution for larger vehicles like pickup trucks. In terms of connectivity, Delphi aims to provide seamless integration of communication, entertainment, and safety systems within vehicles. At the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show, Delphi showcased a wide range of innovative products, from satellite radio to Bluetooth-enabled devices, underscoring its leadership in automotive technology. Ogilvy, Delphi’s long-time executive, remains confident in the company’s future, especially in the Chinese market, where he sees great potential in new energy vehicles and advanced safety systems. With a history dating back to 1936, Delphi has consistently led in automotive electronics, from car radios to telematics. As it moves forward, Delphi is well-positioned to shape the future of connected, safe, and sustainable transportation.
