The integration of numerical control (NC) technology and CNC machine tools has effectively addressed automation challenges for small-to-medium-sized parts that require complex shapes and high precision. This advancement not only significantly improves production efficiency and machining accuracy but also reduces the physical workload on operators, shortening the overall production preparation cycle. However, despite these benefits, CNC lathes are prone to various malfunctions during operation, making fault maintenance a top priority for users. While some manufacturers offer after-sales support, it is often not always timely or reliable. Therefore, having a basic understanding of maintenance techniques can help identify issues quickly, reduce downtime, and get the equipment back up and running as soon as possible. In daily operations, common failures include issues with tool holders, spindles, thread cutting, system display, drive units, and communication problems. Among these, tool holder-related issues are particularly frequent. In this article, I will discuss four types of failures encountered with a four-station electric tool holder and provide practical solutions. The CNC system in use is the GSK series lathe control system manufactured by Guangzhou CNC Equipment Co., Ltd. **Failure 1: Electric Tool Holder Does Not Lock Properly** **Causes and Solutions:** 1. **Misalignment of the Tool Position:** Open the top cover of the tool holder, rotate the tray, and adjust its position so that the Hall sensor aligns with the magnet. Ensure the tool is positioned accurately. 2. **Insufficient Locking Time in the System:** Adjust the system parameter for locking time. For example, set the new tool holder lock time to t = 1.2 seconds. 3. **Mechanical Locking Mechanism Failure:** Disassemble the tool holder, inspect the mechanical components, and check if the positioning pin is damaged or worn out. If necessary, replace or repair the faulty part. **Failure 2: Electric Tool Holder Keeps Rotating Continuously, and Other Positions Are Also Turning** **Causes and Solutions:** 1. **Damaged Hall Sensor at a Specific Tool Position:** Identify which tool position causes continuous rotation. Use the system to command a rotation to that position and check the voltage on the Hall sensor signal using a multimeter. If no voltage change is detected, the Hall element is likely damaged. Replace the sending disk or the Hall sensor. 2. **Disconnection in the Signal Line for a Specific Tool Position:** Check the wiring between the tool signal and the system. Look for any loose or broken connections and reestablish the proper connection. 3. **Faulty Location Signal Reception Circuit in the System:** If the Hall sensor and wiring are functioning properly, the issue may be with the mainboard. In such cases, replace the mainboard to restore normal operation. By understanding these common faults and their solutions, operators can improve their ability to troubleshoot and maintain CNC lathes efficiently. This knowledge helps minimize downtime and ensures smooth, uninterrupted production.
