Ningxia will build 400,000 tons of dimethyl ether industrial device

On January 29, a signing ceremony was held in Chengdu to finalize the contract for the licensing of two invention patent technologies and engineering designs between the Southwest Research and Design Institute of Chemical Engineering and Sichuan Tianyi Science and Technology Co., Ltd. This agreement also covers the construction of a 400,000-ton-per-year dimethyl ether (DME) industrial plant by Ningxia Baota Group. This facility is currently the world's largest gas-phase DME production unit, marking a significant technological breakthrough for China in the field of DME development. The project is expected to serve as a model for large-scale DME production and its broader commercial application. According to reports, the Baota Group conducted extensive research and market analysis on DME technology both domestically and internationally. They engaged in discussions with leading research institutions and ultimately selected the Southwest Research and Design Institute and Tianke Group due to their advanced, reliable, and mature technologies. The project is expected to require an investment of 120 million yuan and is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2008. The plant will utilize a methanol gas-phase catalytic dehydration process, featuring a unique vaporization decanter structure and a simplified separation process. This design is expected to reduce investment costs by 30% and significantly lower energy consumption. Specifically, steam usage per ton of product will be 0.5 tons less than that of similar facilities worldwide. Additionally, the use of self-developed catalysts will achieve a methanol-to-DME selectivity of over 99.5%, nearly eliminating exhaust emissions and reducing methanol consumption per ton of product. More than a decade ago, the Southwest Institute pioneered the establishment of several gas-phase methanol-dehydration-based DME plants, including kiloton-scale and 10,000-ton-scale units for fuel-grade and aerosol-grade DME at companies such as Guangdong Zhongshan Fine Chemicals Co., Ltd. Today, the institute and Tianke Group have successfully implemented more than 40 DME production units globally. All these projects meet or exceed design specifications, with DME purity ranging from 99% to 99.9% and product yields reaching as high as 98%.
