Jinan Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. has successfully launched its 273mm seamless steel pipe production project, a milestone for the Chinese seamless steel pipe industry. The process involved piercing, rolling, sizing, and straightening, with all four main machines completing their trials smoothly.
For years, domestic manufacturers had to rely on imported equipment for the production of 273mm seamless steel pipes. However, high costs and poor after-sales support limited production efficiency. After extensive research, Jinan Heavy Industry decided to break into this market, aiming to provide a more cost-effective and reliable solution.
In April 2006, the company secured a major contract worth nearly 100 million yuan from Jiangyin New Changjiang Group to build a 273mm seamless steel pipe production line. This marked a turning point, as Jinan Heavy Industry transitioned from supplying individual machines like straighteners and rolling mills to becoming a full-system supplier.
The Jiangyin project was not only the largest domestic-scale seamless steel pipe line but also the biggest single contract in the company’s history. To meet tight deadlines, Zhang Xiangdong, a project manager from Jigong, worked on-site in Jiangyin since early 2008. The team achieved remarkable results: on the first day of operation, they produced 30 pieces of 219mm steel pipes with a 10cm wall thickness, followed by another 80 the next day. The products were widely praised by local manufacturers and industry experts.
“The Jiangyin project is a landmark achievement for Jinan Heavy Industry as it entered the metallurgical equipment sector,†said an executive. “It marks the end of foreign monopolies in large-scale steel pipe manufacturing and signifies the localization of critical equipment. This success holds immense long-term value for the company.â€
Additionally, Jinan Heavy Industry has recently signed a second 273mm seamless steel pipe production line with Shouguang Giant Energy Company, further solidifying its position in the industry.
