World Chemicals $1 Billion Club Ranking

BASF has taken the top spot from Dow Chemical in the latest 2007 "Chem Weekly" ranking of the world's top chemical companies. Based on 2006 sales figures, BASF outperformed Dow Chemical, with its chemical sales rising by 19% to $51.6 billion, while Dow saw a more modest increase of 6% to $49.1 billion. ExxonMobil Chemical and Shell Chemicals followed in third and fourth place, respectively. Among the top 10, three oil companies with petrochemical divisions made an appearance, with Total placing eighth—rising to second after 2006. All three oil companies saw their chemical sales grow by over 12%. One of the most significant shifts this year was Ineos, which climbed from 47th to fifth after acquiring BP’s Yinuo Petrochemical business at the end of 2005. Its sales surged sixfold to $36 billion. DuPont fell from first to sixth, while China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) maintained its seventh position. Lyondell Chemical and Bayer ranked ninth and tenth, respectively. The gap between the top three chemical companies narrowed significantly. BASF's sales were 5% higher than Dow’s, and Dow’s sales were just 1% ahead of ExxonMobil’s. However, the gap between the top companies and those further down widened. Shell’s sales were 11% higher than Ineos’, and BASF’s were 150% higher than Bayer’s. BP dropped in the rankings due to the sale of its chemicals division, Econal, to Ineos. Sinopec also disappeared from the list because it merged with Nippon Oil in August 2006, and Nippon Oil did not disclose its chemical revenue. Meanwhile, BASF acquired Takeda Co., Ltd.'s shares in the BASF Takeda vitamin joint venture, and Mitsui took over Takeda’s stake in Mitsui Takeda Chemical Co., Ltd. Industry experts predict that continued mergers and acquisitions will reshape next year’s rankings. Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) recently acquired GE Plastics for $11.6 billion, boosting its chemical sales to $19.7 billion and placing it 11th. This acquisition is expected to push Sabic into the top 10 in the coming year.
