In 2007, a groundbreaking innovation emerged from the Gudong Oil Production Plant in the Shandong Shengli Oilfield. A team led by worker technician Du Shengli developed an improved piston pump for the binary compound flooding station, which significantly enhanced the quality control (QC) results. This achievement earned the Shengli Petroleum Administration Bureau the first prize in QC results at the Gudong Plant, marking a historic milestone for frontline staff.
The development of this piston pump was driven by a common challenge: the frequent damage to the Versail seat during maintenance. Traditional extraction methods using the Versail extraction hook often caused severe damage to the three bearings of the seat, rendering the tool unusable after just 3–5 uses. Attempts to use alternative tools to remove the damaged seat frequently resulted in damage to the inlet valve cavity, reducing pump efficiency and increasing maintenance costs.
Du Shengli, who frequently encountered these issues during daily maintenance of injection pumps, sought a more effective solution. Drawing on the principle of torque, he designed a new type of Versail extractor. This innovative tool utilized the force generated by nuts and screws to lift the two fixed round ends connected to the Versail seat, allowing for safe and efficient removal without damaging the internal components.
After months of testing and refinement, the new Versail extractor was successfully applied to the 3ZP piston pump and later widely adopted in the Sancai Center. The results were impressive—extraction time dropped from over 30 minutes to under 10 minutes, and the tool could now be reused more than 15 times, up from just 3–5. This not only saved approximately 50,000 yuan in replacement costs but also improved pump efficiency by 4 percentage points.
Moreover, the new extractor significantly reduced the physical strain on workers, minimized maintenance time, and increased overall operational efficiency. This invention marked a major step forward in improving both productivity and working conditions in oilfield maintenance operations.
