In January this year, FAW Jiefang's Dawei model made its official debut and quickly gained popularity among users. Its growth rate has been impressive, marking a significant shift in FAW's position in the heavy dump truck market. According to Liu Zhenguo, Minister of Foreign Trade at China No. 1 Automobile Industry Corp., Dawei has effectively changed the previous situation where FAW lacked a strong presence in heavy-duty trucks.
According to recent reports, despite a 11.37% decline in the total volume of medium- and heavy-duty trucks in the first quarter of this year, FAW Jiefang managed to secure the top sales spot with 28,000 units sold. This achievement not only restored FAW’s dominance in the domestic heavy truck market but also highlighted the key role played by the Dawei model.
Liu further explained that initially, Dawei was only produced at the Qingdao plant, but due to increasing demand, the company decided to expand production to FAW headquarters. This move reflects the growing market confidence in the product.

At the heart of any vehicle is the engine, and the performance of the engine determines the overall quality and price of the truck. The Dawei Heavy Truck is powered by the CA6DF2L series diesel engine, developed by FAW Dalian Diesel Engine Co. (Dachai). Fan Yanfeng, General Manager of FAW Group, expressed high expectations for Dachai, emphasizing that the engine's design ensures reliability even under non-standard usage conditions, allowing the product to stay ahead of market demands.
The CA6DF2L series draws on German DEUTZ technology and standards, and after three years of research and testing, it was finally launched into production. With power ranging from 280 to 340 horsepower, the engine meets national II emission standards and has the potential to reach III and IV levels. It offers high power, long life, low emissions, and excellent adaptability, making it suitable for heavy trucks and high-end passenger cars.
To ensure quality, the production process includes advanced techniques such as digital control tightening and anti-error computer photos. Every step is carefully monitored to prevent leaks and misinstallations, ensuring that the final product meets the highest standards.
FAW Jiefang took a cautious approach when launching Dawei, starting with small-scale trials in the Central Plains region before expanding. This strategy allowed the product to mature through continuous improvements, ultimately proving to be a smart move.
Shandong, a major transportation hub, became one of the first regions where Dawei was introduced. Local dealers reported strong demand, with the truck offering better stability and economic performance than similar models. In Tangshan, where traffic increased due to Shougang’s relocation, Dawei was in high demand, with some customers waiting over 300 units due to limited supply.
However, challenges remain, including conversion capacity and financing issues. Despite these hurdles, if resolved, the company believes they could sell over 1,000 units this year.
The success of Dawei is not just about the product itself, but also about the innovative profit model that prioritizes user value. FAW Jiefang focuses on cost efficiency, offering lower purchase, maintenance, fuel, and operating costs compared to competitors. For example, the fuel consumption of the 320-hp 8×4 dump truck is at least 3 liters less per 100 km, saving users around 24,000 yuan annually.
Additionally, the widespread service network ensures easy access to spare parts, reducing downtime. The use of a mature platform also helps keep manufacturing costs low, giving Dawei a competitive pricing edge.
With its solid foundation and strong market performance, Dawei is set to become a preferred choice for more users, proving itself as a reliable “money-making machine†in the heavy truck industry.
