The domestic auto industry's automatic transmission systems have long depended on foreign trade or joint ventures to access foreign intellectual property. However, this situation is beginning to change, thanks to the efforts of Chinese automakers like Geely. In the first half of this year, Geely officially launched its independently developed automatic transmission, which is now being gradually integrated into its current vehicle models. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first automatic transmission in China with full independent intellectual property rights.
Developed by the Geely Automobile Research Institute, the transmission covers a range from 1.3L to 1.6L engines. Established in 2000, the research institute has been central to Geely’s strategy for developing its own brand. To further enhance its capabilities, Geely invested 350 million yuan last year to renovate and expand the facility. The company also brought in experienced leadership, including Shen Fengyu, who previously served as president of Daewoo’s automobile research institute and head of the Korean Automotive Engineering Association. As vice president of R&D and dean of the automotive research institute, Shen played a key role in learning from South Korea’s advanced automatic transmission technologies.
According to the China Gear Professional Association, China’s auto transmissions have historically lacked independent intellectual property and have relied heavily on imports. In 2001, the country imported $480 million worth of automatic transmissions, rising to $600 million in 2002, $860 million in 2003, and $730 million in just the first seven months of 2004. Experts warned that if this trend continued, by 2010, China could be importing car gearboxes worth tens of billions of yuan annually.
Geely’s breakthrough represents a bold step forward for Chinese automakers. In the past year, companies like Chery and Jiangling also made impressive progress, showing that the Chinese national brands were gaining momentum and confidence in 2005. With Geely leading the way, the future of China’s automotive industry looks increasingly promising.
