Allison gearbox favored by Madrid Fire Service team

In 2014, the Madrid Fire Department launched a fleet renewal plan, adding 11 heavy-duty fire trucks equipped with Allison transmissions to serve the fire stations throughout the region. These Mercedes Atego 1629 AF chassis and Rosenbauer body fire engines are equipped with Allison 3000 series gearboxes to provide emergency rescue workers with much needed reliability, handling and safety.

The Madrid Fire Department has a fleet of 371 vehicles, including fire engines, ladder trucks, rescue vehicles, nuclear and chemical vehicles, and lighting rescue vehicles. Based on a good experience of using the Allison transmission fire fighting vehicle last year, Madrid The Fire Department recently purchased a fire truck equipped with an Allison transmission. Before applying this configuration throughout the fleet, the new car will be tested at the Las Rosas Center Fire Department to verify equipment and system performance.

Recently, a total of 80 local firefighters participated in five one-day training and tests for new vehicles equipped with Allison transmissions. Roberto Prieto Merchán, technical director of the Vehicle Resources Department of the Madrid Fire Department, points out that even with confidence in one product, there are many challenges when it comes into use.

“Allison has successfully met a series of challenges in accordance with our strict requirements – to achieve the best body matching, provide adequate training and get users' approval. As a result, in the new car procurement in 2014, we once again selected Ai. Rieson gearboxes,” said Merchán.

Due to its superior reliability and safety, Allison automatic gearboxes are usually the preferred configuration for public ambulances, fire engines, and rescue vehicles. In heavy vehicles driving near the maximum load, crossing the congested roads, every minute and every second, this is the most severe operating conditions for the driver. Anything that helps simplify driving operations can increase operational safety.

“The Allison transmission allows the driver to concentrate on the road conditions,” Merchán said. “The gearbox ensures precise torque transmission to the drive wheels, while the retarder provides extra braking force. Only in extreme cases or completely stop. Only need to use the service brake."

Daniel De la Fuente, a firefighter and senior ambulance driver, agreed with this view: “I recommend Allison automatic gearboxes based on two points. First, it allows us to hold the steering wheel all the time without manual shifting. Secondly, the automatic transmission can perform very effective progressive emergency braking according to emergency needs,” he said. “And, for our industry's needs, manually preselecting specific gear functions ensures that the vehicle is It is also safe and comfortable to use water pumping when moving."

De la Fuente has also been a driving instructor for more than a decade. When he talked about the advantages of automatic transmissions over AMTs or manual transmissions, he never hesitated. "Using the Allison transmission delivers smooth torque without jitter. It is safer for firefighters, and the driver does not have to worry about the power interruptions transmitted to the drive wheels," De la Fuente said.

Jesús Yugueros, a fire engine driving expert of the Madrid Fire Department, has extensive experience in driving trucks and even passenger cars equipped with automatic transmissions. "Assembling an Allison Transmission is very practical. You only need to focus on acceleration and braking. The full throttle power shift function provides greater flexibility by using the accelerator pedal to achieve downshifts."

Yugueros added, “Firefighters who are certified soon need to enrich their driving experience, and the Allison automatic gearbox greatly facilitates operation. Our team soon learned the usefulness and reliability of the Allison transmission. The staff is very It's easy to get used to driving these trucks."

Technical director Merchán also commented on the huge advantages of maintenance. He said, "The retarder extends the service life of the brakes, and the electronic control system protects the powertrain. The absence of clutches significantly reduces maintenance costs, as well as maintenance and downtime. Although we currently have only 12 cars equipped with Ai. The Lieson automatic transmission fire truck, but we plan to continue to update the fleet configuration."
