Under the environment of the overall macroeconomic decline, the four major industries, which account for 85% of China's coal consumption, such as electricity, steel, building materials, and chemical industry, have seen their output increase since the second half of the year, and coal demand has shown a slowing trend. In September 2008, thermal power generation, pig iron production, and cement production increased by only 2.7%, -6.1%, and 3.1% year-on-year, representing a deceleration in the growth rate for seven consecutive months.
It is worth noting that the amount of coal in domestic ports continues to climb. Affected by the drop in demand, part of the north transit ports, southern port, and power plant inventory coal remain high. Qinhuangdao port coal storage capacity was as high as 8.3 million tons on October 19, 800,000 tons higher than the coal stocks warning line, 66% more than the same period of last year; on October 7, the total coal inventories of Guangzhou Port also reached 2.538 million tons, exceeding Nearly 1 million tons of normal inventory.
