CFD Swap Meet and Muster
On Saturday, June 16th, the 5-11 Club and Fire Buffs of Illinois hosted a joint event at the Quinn Fire Academy that included both a swap meet and a fire muster. It was quite the gathering, with lots of people coming together to celebrate and learn more about firefighting culture. I managed to snap some pictures while I was there, and here are a few highlights from the day.
The first thing that caught my eye was the presence of several Chicago Fire Department (CFD) units, including Company 5-1-1. Larry Shapiro did an amazing job capturing the scene as these vehicles rolled in. One particularly striking shot shows the hazmat unit, which looked ready to tackle any hazardous incident. It's always impressive to see these specialized teams in action.
Another memorable moment was when Radioman’s Dave Weaver brought out his classic CFD Dodge Monaco for Division 7. This vehicle was a real throwback to earlier days of firefighting, and it drew quite a crowd. The nostalgia factor was high, and Larry Shapiro snapped a great picture of this beauty sitting proudly in the yard.
One of the newer additions to the fleet was also on full display—the CFD (8-8-12) medical ambulance bus. Bill Friedrich captured the essence of this modern piece of equipment, showcasing how far firefighting technology has come. It was fascinating to see such a state-of-the-art vehicle parked alongside some of the older models.
Speaking of older models, an Ahrens Fox engine was busy pumping water in the street. Carl Misek got a fantastic shot of this classic engine in operation, its powerful jets creating a dramatic spray that caught everyone's attention. There's something almost poetic about seeing these vintage machines still performing their duties.
Photographers were certainly not lacking at this event. Wherever there were fire trucks lined up, you could bet there would be someone with a camera snapping away. Larry Shapiro once again delivered some stunning shots, including one of the new engine positioned outside the training academy. The crimson color of the vehicle really stood out against the backdrop, making it a standout image.
The training academy itself had a brand-new engine on hand for visitors to admire. Larry Shapiro managed to get two excellent shots—one showing the front and another focusing on the rear. Both perspectives highlighted the sleek design and advanced features of this cutting-edge piece of firefighting gear.
Rounding out the collection was a Wadsworth Ohio Ward LaFrance Ambassador P80 engine belonging to Doug Reno from Wadsworth, Illinois. This particular model was part of a collection on display, and Larry Shapiro managed to capture its elegance and history perfectly. It was a reminder of the rich legacy of firefighting vehicles over the years.
All in all, the event was a fantastic blend of tradition and innovation. From the classic engines to the latest technology, it was clear that firefighting is a field steeped in history but constantly evolving.
