At 4:40 AM on June 27, 2011, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 12, responded to a house fire on Dawes Avenue. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire coming from the front of the building, with both floors fully involved. The incident was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm. Fortunately, the family managed to escape without any injuries. The Daily Herald reported: > "A Glen Ellyn house was seriously damaged Monday following an early morning fire, authorities said. The two-story structure in the 500 block of Dawes Avenue was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived about 4:30 a.m. The homeowners were awakened by smoke detectors and escaped without injury, according to Craig Eldridge, spokesman for the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company."

Stephen Wilcox provided additional insight: > "As we approached the rear of the house, the escape window is on the right side of the shot. We began to see the intense conditions in the 'C' section. There was a double sliding glass door in the middle of the lower level, and a deck stretched across the back of the house. Fire had taken hold of that area completely."

Wilcox continued: > "Our first look at the fire in the rear was alarming. It’s crucial to do a full 360° walk around any fire scene—it changes everything. The point of origin was between the steps on the right and the double door opening. A cooking pit had been used earlier and replaced, along with three propane tanks. Those tanks exploded, contributing significantly to the fire spread. The family reportedly evacuated through those doors."

Wilcox added: > "We used two-and-a-half inch lines to control the fire before bringing in the tower. The water supply was limited—only four-inch lines were available, so we had to manage water usage carefully. The tower had a great position to reach the roof and attic. Unfortunately, both the second floor and the roof collapsed during the firefighting efforts."
