On the early morning of June 27, 2011, firefighters from the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department arrived at 555 Dawes Avenue to find a house fully engulfed in flames. The structure was two stories in the front and three in the rear. Stephen Wilcox captured this scene.

The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 12, responded to a house fire on Dawes Avenue around 4:40 AM on June 27, 2011. Stephen Wilcox was among the first to arrive and immediately saw heavy fire coming from the front door, with both floors in the rear completely involved. The situation was so severe that the alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. Fortunately, the family escaped without injury.

The Daily Herald reported:

A Glen Ellyn house was seriously damaged Monday following an early morning fire, authorities said.

The two-story structure in the 500 block of Dawes Avenue was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived about 4:30 a.m. The homeowners were awakened by smoke detectors and escaped without injury, according to Craig Eldridge, spokesman for the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company.

Stephen Wilcox shared more details about the scene:

As we approached the rear of the building, the escape window was visible on the right side. The lower level had a double sliding glass door leading to a deck that was fully on fire. The conditions in the back were extremely dangerous.

More from Stephen:

Our first look at the fire in the rear made it clear how important it is to do a 360-degree walk-around at every fire. This information changes everything. The point of origin was between the steps on the right and the double door opening. A cooking pit had been used earlier and replaced, along with three propane tanks. Those tanks exploded, causing the fire to spread rapidly. The family managed to escape through those doors.

Two-and-a-half-inch lines were used to knock down the fire before the aerial ladder was brought in to finish the job. The water supply was limited, as the local lines were only four inches in diameter, making water conservation essential. The tower provided excellent coverage over the roof and attic area. Unfortunately, both the second floor and the roof collapsed during the operation.

This was a tough call for the crew, but they did their job well under extreme conditions. It's a reminder of the dangers faced by first responders and the importance of quick action and proper planning during emergencies.
