Former Glenbrook FPD Fire Chief Donald Long
On September 16, 2021, Donald E. Long, a beloved figure in Glenview, Illinois, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family. He was 93 years old and had been married to his wife, Mary Long (nee Rieb), for an incredible 66 years. Don is survived by his two daughters, Linda (Dennis) Burmeister and Cheryl (Martin) Haugen, as well as his four grandchildren—Bryan (Erin) Burmeister, Matthew (Laura) Burmeister, Christopher Haugen, and Emma Haugen (fiancé Travis Toliver). He also leaves behind his great-granddaughter, Elaine “Ellie.†Don’s family has fond memories of his life and the countless ways he touched their lives.
Don’s journey began in Glenview, where he spent his entire life. A dedicated public servant, Don graduated from both Oakton Community College and Southern Illinois University. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later became a volunteer firefighter for the Glenbrook Rural Fire District. His commitment didn’t stop there—he eventually joined the Glenbrook Fire Protection District as one of its first employees and worked his way up to become Fire Chief. Throughout his career, he remained deeply involved in the community, holding leadership roles in organizations like the Joseph Sesterhenn Glenview American Legion Post #166, the Glenview History Center, and the Glenview Council of the U.S. Navy League. Don was also a devoted member of Glenview Sunrise Rotary Club and the Glenview Naval Air Museum Board of Directors. He even found time to participate in the Glenview Park District Starlite Singers and took part in Civil War reenactments. For many years, Don was the team captain for Rebuilding Together, giving back to those in need. His contributions were recognized when he was named Glenview Citizen of the Year in 1994 and received the Alumni of the Year award from Oakton Community College.
One of Don’s most cherished hobbies was volunteering at the Wagner Farm in Glenview, a place close to his heart since he grew up on his family’s farm, which is now part of Flick Park. Don’s love for history and community service extended into his faith life at Immanuel Lutheran Church. There, he served in various capacities, including as Chairman of the Congregation, Chairman of the Property Commission, and Chairman of the Cemetery Board. Don also sang in the church choir and participated in many of their theatrical productions. His devotion to his faith and community was unwavering throughout his life.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home, located at 1240 Waukegan Road in Glenview. On Thursday, September 23, there will be another visitation starting at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1850 Chestnut Avenue, Glenview. Interment will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Glenview History Center, 1121 Waukegan Road, Glenview, IL 60025, or the Glenview Naval Air Museum, 2040 Lehigh Avenue, Glenview, IL 60025.
