Thursday afternoon (5/31/18), Wheeling firefighters were dispatched to 1090 Honeysuckle Drive following a report from a concerned neighbor who noticed smoke coming from the front porch of a residence. Upon arrival, the firefighters quickly identified the source of the fire as burning siding near the main entrance. Thanks to their swift action, they managed to contain the flames before they could spread further, preventing any damage to the soffit or the interior of the home.
Careless disposal of cigarette butts was suspected to be the cause of the fire, highlighting the importance of proper waste management, especially when dealing with potentially hazardous materials like lit cigarettes. The firefighters’ prompt response undoubtedly prevented a much more serious situation from developing.
Attached are several photos taken by Larry Shapiro that capture the scene. The first image shows Wheeling firefighters hard at work, ensuring the fire was fully extinguished. The second photograph depicts the cigarette butt that nearly caused significant damage, serving as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of neglect. The third picture highlights the fire trucks arriving on the scene, ready to tackle the emergency. The final image features a Rosenbauer America Commander Cobra fire truck, showcasing the equipment used to support the firefighting efforts.
This incident underscores the critical role firefighters play in our community and the dangers posed by seemingly innocuous actions, such as improper cigarette disposal. It’s essential for everyone to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid similar situations in the future.
